Maggie on her Tennessee Walking HorseI have always shared two passions in my life: horses and photography. For years now, I have wanted to put these passions together in book form, traveling the country taking pictures of Tennessee Walkers in the various pursuits in which they excel. Over the 25 years of my involvement in the breed, I have developed friendships with hundreds of horses and horse owners. The Walking Horse is more than just a show horse and I wanted to share this in a manner that could be enjoyed by horse owner and non–horse owners alike. That is why I started this project.

The last year has taken me over twenty–six thousand miles by car and fifteen thousand by air. I was on the road for ten months, visiting each of forty–eight continental states. What an incredible journey! I sipped mint juleps on a porch in the bayou, snuggled deep into a featherbed in the Midwest. I watched Old Faithful erupt by moonlight and saw the sun rise over the Smokey Mountains.

Maggie with her Tennessee Walking Horse, WranglerDuring this journey, I made new friends, both horses and their owners. But best of all, I saw the friendships that these owners had developed with their horses and their horses with them. I discovered on this journey that despite the multitude of differences in Tennessee Walking Horse owners–the accents, climates, appearances, landscapes to name a few–one thing remains constant: their hearts are as grand as their horses.
